Marcel Hirscher is undoubtedly the strongest slalom athlete this season! For the 5th time in a row, Hirscher has done it again, winning the slalom in Zagreb on Thursday with a time of 1:50.65!
Fellow Austrian, Michael Matt came in second with a time of 1:50.65, and Norwegian skier Henrik Kristoffersen finished third.
Hirscher has won places on the podium in his last 12 giant slalom races in the world cup and world championships, and has won 7 of them! Proving he’s an unstoppable force this season.
In light of his win, let’s take you through some of his biggest skiing achievements!
World Cup Debut
Making his world cup debut at the age of 18 in 2007, the half-Austrian and hap-dutch skier Marcel Hirscher quickly rose to fame and established himself as slalom king!
Between 2007 and 2009, he had much success in the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G events at the Junior World Ski Championships, claiming a number of podiums, including three gold medals, two silvers and a bronze across all three disciplines.
Moving up the ranks
As he approached his late teens, Hirscher naturally began setting his sights on the Mens events. Although the transition was tough at the beginning, 2012 was the year that all changed.
He went from taking 15th place overall in the FIS World Cup in 2011, to winning the championship in 2012.
Slalom King
He didn’t stop there, Hirscher won the overall title yet again in 2013 with six victories, including taking the slalom title and runnier-up in the Giant slalom. He scored a total of 18 podium finishes out of 19 races – that is epic!
Don’t be fooled, he went on take the overall FIS Alpine Ski world cup AGAIN in 2014, and defended his title in 2015 – making it his record-breaking fourth consecutive World Championship overall win!
Life just keeps getting better and better for Hirscher, winning the Giant slalom in Alta Badia a couple of weeks ago, and coming first in the slalom in Zagreb last Thursday!
With achievements like these, we’re sure to see more wins from Hirscher this season, and possibly in the upcoming Olympics!
